Concrete is one of the most widely used building materials in all types of construction, both commercial and residential, throughout the world.
Concrete is also among the most durable of construction materials, which you can see in concrete buildings that are still standing after thousands of years.
Concrete is a compound made from aggregate (crushed rock) and cement, which is a mixture of several naturally-occurring minerals, which are then bonded together and hardened.
Concrete is used as support structures for bridges, roads, and buildings, in walls, as a foundation, and for decorative purposes in a wide variety of construction projects, such as skyscrapers, parking structures, walkways, patios, and landscaping applications.
Top Five Reasons To Use Concrete
Concrete is the material of choice for the vast majority of construction projects, whether for commercial or residential purposes. Following are the five main reasons that concrete is superior to other building materials.
REASON 1: IT IS STRONG AND LONG-LASTING
REASON 2: IT IS VERSATILE
Because concrete can be reinforced and can hold heavy loads, concrete can be used for many applications. And, whatever your project needs, concrete can conform and be shaped so as to adapt to whatever custom engineering is needed. Concrete can be rounded, curved, straight, and even made into odd shapes. It is truly among the most versatile of building materials.
REASON 3: IT IS FIRE-RESISTANT
Safety is always a top priority, so knowing if you use concrete that you are providing another layer of protection, it becomes easy to see why this is a good pick. It won’t burn, so if there is a fire, the structure is safe. It will also prevent a fire from starting if it were to be ignited from the outside, making it a great barrier.
REASON 4: IT IS AFFORDABLE
Concrete is more cost-effective per unit than most alternative materials. During construction, it provides more structural support with less material than most other building materials. After completion, concrete helps reduce ongoing expenses because it is a good insulator, so heating and cooling will cost less.
REASON 5: IT IS READILY AVAILABLE
Pre-mixed concrete is available in pretty much any location, so you can source it locally. This means generally lower costs for shipping and delivery, plus you support the local economy. You typically won’t have to shop around to find it or place special orders to get enough for your project.
It isn’t difficult to see why concrete is so widely used as the primary material in construction. When architects, builders, and homeowners want a solid material that will provide a wide variety of flexibility and benefits, concrete delivers on many levels.
